“I found the bracelet.” Adam crossed his arms over his chest and gave her a level look.

“Ariadne’s?”

“Perhaps. It was in the pool.”

Comprehension crossed her delicate features. “That is what you wouldn’t tell me last night.”

Terrence did not miss the implication of her remark or the swift glance Kinmont gave him. “Last night?” he asked in a pleasant voice. “As far as I know, you two spoke over dinner—where I was present—and then you went to bed, Brittany.”

His daughter blushed. It was impossible to miss and reminiscent of other times when as a child she’d been caught out in a lie or some mischief.

“I…I…well—”

“Brittany came to see me after you were asleep, my lord.” His daughter’s lover looked bland. “As you know, she can be rather impulsive.”

“I see.” He personally did not have any objection to Kinmont as a son-in-law, in fact, he’d been resigned to it from almost the first time the two of them had looked at each other. It was true, the young man was not of the nobility, nor did he come from a prestigious family and have great wealth, but he was intelligent, educated, hard-working and certainly respected in his field considering he wasn’t yet thirty. “I take it my permission for the two of you to marry is merely a formality since an expedient wedding would be best anyway. It isn’t an original approach, but an effective one.”

“Marry?” Brittany’s mouth parted and she dropped her parasol.

“Expediently.” Adam clambered out of the gulley and retrieved it, handing it back to her with a small smile on his mouth. “What do you say, Britt, will you be my wife?”
